Discover the natural wonders of Tahiti on this inner-island safari tour by 4WD vehicle. After your guide picks you up from your hotel in downtown Papeete or at the wharf, hop into the Jeep for a thrilling ride — traversing rough roads best accessed by a 4x4 vehicle.

Make your first stop at Mount Marau, a former 19th-century French fortress. Treat yourself to a gorgeous vista of the lush, rainforest-clad Punaruu Valley and snap photos of the island's highest peaks: Orohena, Aorai, Tetufera and Teamaa.

Your tour continues to the Arahoho Blowhole, an unmarked roadside attraction created over eons by liquid lava, when battering surf undercut the basalt shoreline and eroded a tunnel-like passageway. When large waves crash into the rocks, watch in awe as a geyser-like plume of seawater shoots into the air and sprays onlookers. 

Check out the local surfers and the black-sand beach before re-boarding the Jeep. You’ll enter to the Faaurumai Valley near Tahiti’s north coast to visit the three waterfalls of the Cascades of Faarumai — nestled in nearly impenetrable rainforest of hutu and mape trees. It’s an easy 5-minute walk to Vaimahutu Falls, which plunges 100 feet (30 meters) into a crystal-clear pool below. 

Follow your guide along a 20-minute rainforest walk to reach the other two cascades, Haamaremare Iti and Haamaremare Rahi, and spend time at the final waterfall with a refreshing swim if you’d like. Back in your 4WD vehicle, make the return trip to Papeete where your full-day tour ends.

Amazing scenery; very little information

I was very excited to take this tour and see more of Tahiti. The terrain is magical and despite (or perhaps because of) the rain we had on and off throughout the day, I really enjoyed seeing this untamed part of the island. There are so many waterfalls you lose track of them but never did I lose my sense of wonder for the natural beauty we were seeing. As several other reviewers have noted, there isn't a ton of information provided by the guide, although I know I got even less than the rest of my group. As the lone English speaker, I would wait for Eric to provide 3-5 minute explanations in French followed by less than one minute in English and after the first stop, he really didn't communicate with me in English at all. I hope this would not be the case if the group was more mixed. While Eric did a great job of navigating the roads, which is critical given the weather and the road conditions, he had a knack for stopping the vehicle just past the best spot for a photo, so that was a bit of a bummer. The tour description also indicates there will be a short walk to more waterfalls. This was omitted from our tour. I assume because of the weather but I don't know because I was not given any updates on the plan for the day in English. Overall, the landscape speaks for itself but if you are hoping for an informative and helpful guide (and an English language tour), I would try to find a different tour operator.

Sydney was amazing. He was very informative and was awesome driving. I never felt unsafe. The inner island is beautiful. Every turn is another stunning view. I would suggest taking lunch. The best part about the lunch restaurant was the view.

The excursion was great, but nothing of what was noted in the description. It was a jeep ride through the interior of Tahiti, where you saw numerous waterfalls from afar. We stopped to swim in a stream, although had numerous water flies. We stopped for lunch at the top of mountain restaurant, which was beautiful views. We stopped at the lake and a small waterfall for pictures.

Very well organized 8h trip up to the heart of the Tahiti Nui volcano. Nice views of waterfalls and explanation of local ecosystem by a very knowledgeable local tour guide/driver. Good 4WD car well suited for narrow and very steep dirt tracks up and down with a very safety conscious tour guide driver.

We were glad we chose an interior island tour and felt that we were able to see much more than people on busses would see. Riding through the jungle and seeing the numerous waterfalls - one after another after another - was great. It actually rained the day we were on tour which we thought made it even more exciting! Lunch was good but providing approximate costs of menu selections in advance would have been appreciated so we would have been financially prepared.

It was very interesting to drive inside Tahiti island cultera. The driver was very experienced and very patient to drive stip, narrow, one-way path. Beautiful place to see with a lot of waterfalls, lakes and extremely stip peaks all around. We were lucky to get under the rain and to see “virgin hair” - numerous thin waterfalls running down the hills. Well organized lunch in the mountain restaurant. Highly recommend to those who would like to get whole day escape from hot beach.
