Your day trip to Port Arthur Historic Site starts with the drive from Hobart, crossing the Tasman Bridge to leave the city and head to the Tasman Peninsula. Sights you see along the way include Pitwater Causeway, the Forestier Peninsula, Eaglehawk Neck, and Norfolk Bay. Take a drive through the historic town of Richmond (Oct-Apr) and make a short photo stop at the famous convict-built Richmond Bridge.

Continue to drive through the Tasman Peninsula and observe the beautiful coastal scenery of natural bushland and native Australian.

When you arrive at Port Arthur you have ample time to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Embark on a guided walking tour of this former seaside penal colony, once home to the most serious criminals of the time, where more than 30 restored buildings and ruins are available to explore. See sites like the penitentiary, a former granary and flour mill, the separate prison, the Commandant’s House and the church, and learn about the history of the settlement, which dates back to the 1830s, and the brutal living conditions for the convicts via interpretive and interactive presentations.

Then set off on a harbor cruise on Carnarvon Bay to admire the natural beauty of this somber World Heritage–listed site. From the water, admire the scenery of Tasman National Park with its rugged coastline, see the Tasman Arch and Devil’s Kitchen, and circle around the Isle of the Dead.

Lunch is not included but can be purchased at Port Cafe, at the entrance to the Port Arthur Visitor Center, or at Felons, a sit-down restaurant. Both offer a selection of sandwiches, hot food, and drinks. Your day trip ends with the return drive to Hobart.

It is an amazing site to visit and learn about Australian history. If you like history, it is a must-go place.
Good enough

The Guide was kind and enthusiastic but timings for guides and cruise were very disorganised. Also the tour in Port Arthur could've been a bit longer.
Go Greg!!

Had a wonderful time on this Port Arthur tour. Well priced for everything included and an overall a educative and exciting day. Would recommend this trip to anyone staying in Hobart and considering visiting Port Arthur. Greg our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable, funny and easy going making the experience that much better.
Magnificent Port Arthur

The tour to Port Arthur was informative and interesting. Jim our driver was courteous, funny and helpful. We had a stop at historic Richmond and also the Devils Kitchen and Tasman Arch. Port Arthur was magnificent. Don’t look anywhere else. This is a great tour.
History meets nature
, Dec 2021
A well organised tour, I really recommend a visit to Port Arthur site. Behind a peaceful nature, there were dark stories behind each buildings. Mark the guide has a lot of knowledge that he shared throughout the trip, whilst driving us safely and make sure for everyone to join the whole tour experience. A visit to Remarkable Cave was a beautiful bonus! However I would prefer if we can start earlier in the morning so we could have a morning tea stop on the way and tasting local produce of Port Arthur area. Since we’re spending ample time at the site and Port Arthur cafe only has limited menu.
Great family day out
, Dec 2021
A thoroughly good day out, hosted by Mark. We travelled as a family of 4 with two kids aged 6 and 3. It was a big day, but nothing that little legs couldn’t handle (with plenty of toilet and ice cream stops along the way). Fascinating and important history to know and understand. Mark was very knowledgeable and easy going. We had a hire car so had considered driving ourselves down to Port Arthur instead, but are glad we opted for the tour with a hotel pick up instead in the end.
Phil took us not just on...
, Dec 2021
Phil took us not just on a tour but a journey through Tasmanian history. We really enjoyed our trip.
Abit of Port Arthur history
, Dec 2021
The whole trip form start to end was magnificent. Beautiful views & sceneries along the way. Mark (GrayLine) was easy going & made the trip most enjoyable. Truly a worthwhile place to visit.
100% would do it again!!!!
, Nov 2021
So grateful we chose to use grey line coaches rather than self driving to Port Arthur. Our driver Phil was most informative and entertaining and we learnt so much about the history and natural surroundings. Had a great sense of humour and a lot of anecdotal stories about local life and each of the areas we travel through. Port Arthur was awesome, and some of the stops along the way a very lovely surprise. Would definitely recommend travelling with Phil & Greyline buses.
Pure Amazing

From the moment Zack picked me up in the tour Van he was friendly and had a massive smile on his face, During the drive to port Arthur he was explaining some of the history, letting us know so much information, I didn’t know there was that much history behind Hobart and Tasmania At port Arthur Zack joined me on part of my walk around and shared further information about port Arthur and some other little fun facts that I wouldn’t have ever thought of. He took us to some little beaches and the Remarkable caves, which was just breath taking and such an amazing sight to see It was such a lovely day out to end my holiday in Tassie (from Brisbane) Really really loved the tour
