Departure Time

8:30 AM
Start your full-day shore excursion to Middle-earth and Rotorua with pickup from the Tauranga cruise port. Your coach follows a scenic route, crossing the Tauranga Harbour Bridge before departing the Bay of Plenty. After climbing the Kaimai mountain range, note the fertile farmlands of Waikato as you near the town of Matamata and the filming site used for the Hobbiton Movie Set.

Stroll with your guide past hobbit holes belonging to the likes of Bilbo and Frodo during a 2-hour tour of The Shire, an actual New Zealand sheep farm. You’ll recognize scenes from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogies, including the party tree, the Mill and the Green Dragon Inn, where you can finish your Hobbiton tour with a mug of beer, cider or ginger beer (own expense).

Back on board the bus, continue into Rotorua via the Mamaku mountain range. After a stop for lunch (own expense) beside Lake Rotorua, you’re treated to a traditional welcome into the authentic Maori village of Whakarewarewa.

Accompanied by a Maori guide, witness the astounding thermal activity of Rotorua’s bubbling hot springs and mud pools, and watch Pohutu Geyser erupt. Learn how New Zealand’s indigenous people made use of the region, bathing in the hot springs and cooking over steam vents.

Step foot inside Whare Tupuna, a Maori meeting house designed with symbolic wood carvings. Hear songs, see dances and discover Maori customs during a demonstration of warlike fighting skills included in the haka dance.

Your driver takes a separate route on the return trip and, if time allows, stops for an impromptu photo shoot in a redwood forest. You can use provided hats, cloaks, staffs and swords to pose as Gandalf or your favorite hobbit from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit before drop-off at the cruise port.

The tour company and guide were fantastic. Friendly, knowledgeable and good with timing. Hobbiton was crowded and crazy and puts too many people in a group. We missed most of what the Hobbiton guide said because they were so far ahead. Leavve your selfie sticks at home people. How about actually LOOKING at what you're photographing. I recommend the tour, be prepared for crowds.

Hobbiton and Rotorua

Wow this was a truly enjoyable day - our driver was a scream, had a very dry sense of humor and kept us laughing all day. Time was tight on the experiences included, but he ensured we saw the guise blow which was appreciated as it was a sight, wish we did have more time at Rotorua to see some more, loved the drive through town and actually seeing hot springs in residents gardens. Hobbiton was just wonderful, you ready did feel you were actually there with the butterflies, flowers and Hobbit holes. Very interesting tour round and came away with so much knowledge, again it was just done a bit too quickly, I do appreciate that people would hang around and clog up certain areas, but just a slightly slower pace to allow you to stop and focus your camera rather than taking photo and hoping for the best would be better - that's down to Hobbiton as you have to go around with their guide. I wouldn't have not gone, it was a really magical place and the Green Dragon at the end for a glass of refreshment was surreal, had to sit by the fire. We packed a lot in as we were off a cruise ship, will return and visit again as what we saw on that day, views, places we visited and Tauranga itself has made us want to explore at a slow pace and soak up all the wonderful sights and attractions it has to offer. Thank you for a lovely day and the goody bag was much appreciated and used

Being a big fan of Tolkien visiting Hobbiton was an experience of a lifetime. Our driver/guide handled everything professionally. He guided us through Rotorua and kept us on schedule. The snacks provided were a great addition! I wish we had had more time in Hobbiton and were able to explore more, but that tour is dictated by Hobbiton and not by our guide.

Great day out, tour guide was exactly where they said they would meet us, just outside the port. Hugely cheaper than same excursion the cruise line were selling. A good day with a very informative guide. Would I use them again, definitely.

Excellent tour, Rolf our guide was fabulous- very friendly, helpful and knowledgable. It was a long day but I would thoroughly recommend it really enjoyed the snacks too. We were very fortunate to witness the geyser erupting but unfortunately no sign of the Kiwis. A member of our group was chosen to be the visiting “chief” to be challenged and that was an added bonus to the performance by the local Maoris which again was fabulous to see

Fabulous tour of two sights from a cruise ship

This is a wonderful tour of Hobbiton and Rotorua while in port on a cruise ship. The mini bus was waiting for us at the port of Tauranga and the staff were easily visible. On board the bus we were nicely surprised by a full bag of nibbles and drinks placed on our seat. Our guide Rolf was very informative and helpful throughout the whole tour. Hobbiton exceeded expectations. It was like being in the movie and all very green and lush. The complimentary drink there was delicious and we went to the gift shop also. On to Rotorua where we saw a traditional Maori dance, geysers and mud pools. A highlight was seeing a Kiwi bird in the nocturnal area. Our guide made sure we arrived back at the port in good time before our departure. So glad we did this tour.

Mauri visit and Hobbiton. WOW

Great trip. We got to see 2 fantastic sights for price on one. Could have skipped the Rotorua sights and spent more time on the Mauri visit. Their war dance show was fascinating and the land was really interesting. Hobbiton was wonderful even if you hadn't seen the movies. But this is definitely a walking tour! Hobbiton is all small paths, up and down hills and if raining no shelter. Only complaint was time wasted for the group dealing with transportation problems for a non walker.
